Mission

The primary mission of the Chapel Hill Kehillah Preschool is to provide children with a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment that lets the child develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically.

In this child-centered environment, the children will experience the foundations of Jewish life, expressed through the teaching of Jewish music, values, rituals, holidays, arts and crafts, and storytelling.

Building a strong and cohesive community and welcoming the diversity of its families are core values of this institution. Our community will benefit from the voluntary contributions of time, talent and energy by the school's parents.

Philosophy

  • Choices: At KJP, children will have choices in their activities. Making one's own decisions helps foster positive self esteem. Thus, the schedule allows opportunities for both structured and unstructured activities.

  • Varied activities: Children will have access to many different kinds of activities, including active play, dramatic play, manipulative play, reading, science and blocks. Hands-on activities using the various senses are central to the preschool day.

  • Jewish content: Children will engage in craft activities and sing songs with Jewish content. This content will focus mostly around Shabbat and holidays.

  • Behavior Management: Teachers approach discipline as an opportunity for learning and developing self-control. Teachers will tell children what to do (instead of what not to do), praise acceptable behavior, and encourage children to “use their words” to solve conflicts.

  • Toys: All toys will be gentle toys. We do not have action figures, barbies, battery-operated toys or any weapon-related toys.

For more information, please see our KJP Parent Handbook.

Preschool Committee

The Preschool Committee is comprised of parents and community members who are committed to the development and maintenance of a successful preschool. This ongoing Committee will draft the by-laws, make policy decisions, evaluate the Jewish component, and hire the director.

NAEYC

NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) exists for the purpose of leading and consolidating the efforts of individuals and groups working to achieve healthy development and constructive education for all young children. Primary attention is devoted to assuring the provision of high quality early childhood programs for young children (see www.naeyc.org). NAEYC accreditation is a self-reflective process, which takes multiple years. However, the preschool will follow NAEYC guidelines and recommendations from the outset.
