What is a chavurah? A chavurah is a group of families,
couples or individuals who decide to join together for socializing, learning and
celebrating Jewish life together. A chavurah offers its members friendship, an
extended family, and a sense of more focused belonging within the wider Kehillah
community.
What does a chavurah do? Each chavurah is self-directed,
although the Kehillah can provide ideas and support for chavurah activities.
Chavurot can have Shabbat dinner together,
build a sukkah, go on a hike,
participate in social action, etc. In addition to holding events for chavurah
members, chavurot sometimes work together to serve the congregation and the
greater community, thus helping to strengthen our entire Kehillah community
(i.e., helping host a holiday event or working on mitzvah projects).
How do I join a chavurah? Fill out a
Chavurah Interest Form
and send it to Melissa at
execdir@chkehillah.org
or 1200 Mason Farm Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Groups may be small to start to
allow room for growth to accommodate new Kehillah members. Melissa will arrange
an initial meeting for each prospective chavurah and will serve as a resource to
all chavurot.
