Introduction to Hebrew. Monday evenings, March 1, 8, 15, 22. 7-8:30 p.m. Taught by Rabbi Steve Kirschner. Hebrew has been the language of the Jewish people for over three millennia.  This class focuses on the Hebrew alphabet and is intended for those wishing to learn the Hebrew letters and vowels as a step in their journey of learning Hebrew. Participants are also encouraged to enroll in Biblical Hebrew, which follows this course. Kehillah library. $36/members, $54/nonmembers. Please purchase a book before the class: Learn Hebrew Today: Alef-Bet for Adults, by Paul Michael Yedwab, with Howard I. Bogot (available through Amazon).

Biblical Hebrew, Part 1. Monday evenings, April 12, 19, 26 and May 3, 10, 17.    7-8:30 p.m. Taught by Rabbi Steve Kirschner. Even today, despite the Internet and publishers such as Artscroll and Metsudah, a huge array of Jewish texts remains untranslated and accessible only to those who can read Hebrew. Even those with but a bit of Hebrew knowledge can unlock nuances in biblical texts and prayers which would have remained opaque otherwise. This course focuses on the grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew. Kehillah library. $54/members, $72/nonmembers.

Rescue and Reunion. Sun., Mar. 14, 2010, 10:30 a.m. Recently, an incredible reunion took place at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community: Hal Meyers, who as a German Jewish child was rescued from a French internment camp; Simone Lipman, a French social worker who tried to save children hunted by the Nazis during the Holocaust; and Cora Meyers, Hal's wife, whose father played a key role in all of their lives. Please join Simone, Hal and Cora at the Kehillah as they present their story of this incredible history and recent reunion.

NC Museum of Art Judaica Collection. Sun., Apr. 25, 2010, 10:30 a.m.  Lani Parker will present the history of the museum’s Judaic Art Gallery and many works in the collection. The NC Museum of Art is the first art museum in the US with a permanent gallery dedicated to Jewish ceremonial art. The collection exemplifies the creative efforts by generations of artists to celebrate and beautify the ceremonial life of the Jewish people. The renovated museum will reopen to the public the weekend of this event.
